Zakat Calculator (Cash, Gold, Silver and Business) by TheCalcTools

How the Zakat Calculator (Cash, Gold, Silver and Business) works

Zakat is due at 2.5% of wealth you have held above the nisab for one lunar year (hawl). Add cash, savings, gold and silver, investments and business stock, then subtract debts and bills that are due now.

The nisab is the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver (traditionally 7.5 and 52.5 tola). Enter today’s local price per gram. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab because it is lower and benefits more people in need.

Personal items such as your home, car, furniture and clothes are not zakatable. Scholars differ on details such as jewellery in regular use, retirement accounts and long-term debts, so follow the guidance of a scholar you trust.

The formula

Zakat = 2.5% × (zakatable assets − debts due), if this is at least the nisabNisab = 87.48 g × gold price per gram, or 612.36 g × silver price per gram

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Cash at home and in bank accounts$350000
Value of gold you own$400000
Value of silver you own$0
Shares, funds and other investments$150000
Business stock and money owed to you$0
Debts and bills due now$50000
Nisab standardSilver nisab (612.36 g), the more cautious choice
Today's gold price per gram (24K)$28000
Today's silver price per gram$350
  1. Net wealth: 350,000 + 400,000 + 150,000 − 50,000 = $850,000.
  2. Silver nisab: 612.36 × 350 = $214,326, so Zakat is due.
  3. Zakat = 2.5% × $850,000 = $21,250.00.

Result:

Zakat due$21,250.00
Net zakatable wealth$850,000.00
Nisab threshold$214,326.00
StatusAbove the nisab: Zakat is due once a lunar year has passed
Zakat as a monthly saving$1,770.83

Frequently asked questions

Which nisab should I use, gold or silver?

Both are valid opinions. The silver nisab is lower, so more people pay Zakat and more of the poor benefit; many scholars recommend it today. Those whose wealth is only gold sometimes use the gold nisab.

Do I pay Zakat on my house or car?

No, not on items for personal use. Property held for sale or trade is zakatable; rental income that you have saved is counted with your cash.

Is Zakat due on gold jewellery I wear?

The Hanafi school (common in Pakistan and South Asia) says yes; many other scholars exempt jewellery in normal use. Follow the opinion of your school or scholar.

What currency should I use?

Any. Pick your currency at the top and enter all amounts and prices in it.
