How the Test Score Calculator (Percentage and Letter Grade) works
Percentage = correct ÷ total × 100. Each question is worth 100 ÷ total percentage points, so on a 50-question test each question is worth 2%.
Letter grades here use the common US scale (A from 90%, B from 80%, C from 70%, D from 60%) and the College Board plus/minus table. Your teacher’s scale may differ.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Points or questions correct | 42 |
|---|---|
| Total points or questions | 50 |
- 42 out of 50 = 84.0%, grade B.
- You missed 8 points; an A needs 45.
Result:
| Score | 84.0% |
|---|---|
| Letter grade (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60) | B |
| With plus and minus | B |
| Points missed | 8.0 |
| Points needed for an A (90%) | 45.0 |
