Weighted Average Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Weighted Average Calculator works
Multiply each value by its weight, add the products, then divide by the sum of the weights. Values with larger weights count for more.
Weights can be credit hours, quantities, percentages of a course grade or any measure of importance. If all weights are equal, the weighted average equals the simple average.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Values | 90, 75, 85, 60 |
|---|---|
| Weights (same order) | 3, 4, 2, 1 |
- Products: 90 × 3 + 75 × 4 + 85 × 2 + 60 × 1 = 800.
- Total weight 3 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 10.
- Weighted average = 800 ÷ 10 = 80.00, compared with a simple average of 77.50.
Result:
| Weighted average | 80.0000 |
|---|---|
| Simple average (unweighted) | 77.5000 |
| Total weight | 10.0000 |
| Number of values | 4 |
Frequently asked questions
Do the weights need to add up to 100?
No. The calculator divides by the total weight, so 3, 4, 2, 1 gives the same answer as 30%, 40%, 20%, 10%.
How do I average prices bought at different quantities?
Enter the prices as values and the quantities as weights. The result is your average cost per unit.
