How the GPA Calculator works
Choose a letter grade and enter the credit hours for each course; leave the grade as a dash for unused rows. Each letter grade has a grade-point value on the 4.0 scale: A is 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, and so on down to F at 0.
Grade points for a course are its value times its credits. Semester GPA is total grade points divided by total credits. To include earlier terms, enter your previous cumulative GPA and credits, and the calculator weights everything by credits. Schools differ: some do not use plus and minus grades, and some cap an A+ at 4.0 or award more, so check your own policy.
The formula
Worked example
A (3 credits), B+ (4), A- (3), B (2):
| Courses | A×3, B+×4, A-×3, B×2 |
|---|
- Grade points = 4.0×3 + 3.3×4 + 3.7×3 + 3.0×2 = 12 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 6 = 42.3.
- Credits = 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 12.
- GPA = 42.3 ÷ 12 = 3.52.
Result:
| Semester GPA | 3.52 |
|---|---|
| Cumulative GPA | 3.52 |
| Credits this term | 12.0 |
| Total grade points | 42.30 |
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits.
Does this work for weighted or honors GPAs?
It uses the standard 4.0 scale. Weighted scales that give extra points for honors or AP courses vary by school, so this will not match them.
What if my school does not use plus and minus grades?
Use only the plain letters A, B, C, D and F.
How can I raise my GPA?
Retaking a course, if your school replaces the grade, and strong grades in high-credit courses have the largest effect. Try different grades above to see what is needed.
