How the Wallpaper Calculator works
Enter the total width of walls to cover and the wall height.
Each strip is cut as tall as the wall plus one pattern repeat for matching.
Divide the strips needed by the strips per roll, then round up.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Total wall width (ft) | 52 |
|---|---|
| Wall height (ft) | 8 |
| Roll width (in) | 20.5 |
| Roll length (ft) | 33 |
| Pattern repeat (in) | 12 |
| Doors and windows area (sq ft) | 35 |
- Strip length = 8 + 1 = 9 ft, so 3 strips per 33 ft roll.
- 52 ft ÷ 20.5 in needs 31 strips, which is 11 rolls.
Result:
| Net wall area (sq ft) | 381 |
|---|---|
| Strips across the walls | 31 |
| Strips per roll | 3 |
| Rolls needed | 11 |
Frequently asked questions
Why does the pattern repeat matter?
Matching patterns wastes some paper at the top of each strip. Larger repeats use more material.
Does the calculator subtract doors and windows?
It reports net wall area for reference but counts strips from the full wall width, which is the safer way to avoid shortages.
