Tile Calculator by TheCalcTools

How the Tile Calculator works

Enter the area in inches, the tile size and the grout joint.

Each tile effectively occupies tile size + one grout joint along each side.

Divide the area by that footprint and add the waste allowance.

The formula

Tiles = (length ÷ (tile length + joint)) × (width ÷ (tile width + joint))Buy = ⌈tiles × (1 + waste)⌉

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Area length (in)120
Area width (in)96
Tile length (in)12
Tile width (in)12
Grout joint (in)0.125
Waste allowance10 %
  1. Area = 120 × 96 in = 80.0 sq ft.
  2. About 79 tiles fit; buy 87 with waste.

Result:

Tiles (no waste)79
Tiles to buy (with waste)87
Area (sq ft)80.0

Frequently asked questions

How much extra should I buy?

10% for standard layouts, 15–20% for diagonal patterns or large tiles with many cuts.

Do I need to include grout?

Yes. Joints slightly increase the footprint of each tile, so fewer tiles are needed than a plain area ratio suggests.
