Gravel Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Gravel Calculator works
Enter the area’s length, width and the depth of gravel.
Volume in cubic feet is divided by 27 to get cubic yards.
Multiply by density for the weight, since suppliers often sell by the ton.
The formula
Cubic yards = length × width × depth(ft) ÷ 27Tons = cubic yards × density
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Length (ft) | 30 |
|---|---|
| Width (ft) | 10 |
| Depth (in) | 4 |
| Material density (tons per cu yd) | 1.4 |
- 30 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 100.0 cu ft = 3.70 cu yd.
- At 1.4 tons per cu yd that is 5.19 tons.
Result:
| Volume (cu yd) | 3.70 |
|---|---|
| Weight (tons) | 5.19 |
| Volume (cu ft) | 100.0 |
Frequently asked questions
What density should I use?
Crushed stone is typically 1.3–1.5 tons per cubic yard. Ask your supplier for their exact figure.
Should I order extra?
Compaction reduces volume, so many contractors order 5–10% more than the calculated amount.
