How the Unit Converter works

Choose the kind of quantity, type a value, and pick the units to convert from and to. The converter turns your value into a base unit (metres, kilograms, litres, square metres, metres per second, seconds or bytes) and then into the target unit, using exact definitions.

Temperature is the exception: it uses formulas because the scales have different zero points. Data storage includes both decimal units (KB = 1,000 bytes, as used by drive makers and networks) and binary units (KiB = 1,024 bytes, as used by many operating systems). Results show up to eight significant digits.

The formula

Result = value × (from-unit size in base units) ÷ (to-unit size in base units)°C → °F: °F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 · °C → K: K = °C + 273.15.
