How the Trigonometry Calculator (sin, cos, tan, sec, csc, cot) works
On the unit circle, cos θ is the x-coordinate and sin θ the y-coordinate of the point at angle θ. tan = sin/cos, and csc, sec and cot are the reciprocals of sin, cos and tan.
tan and sec are undefined where cos θ = 0 (90°, 270°), and csc and cot where sin θ = 0 (0°, 180°); they show as —.
The formula
tan θ = sin θ ÷ cos θ; csc = 1/sin, sec = 1/cos, cot = 1/tan
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Angle | 30 |
|---|---|
| Unit | Degrees |
- sin 30° = 0.500000, cos 30° = 0.866025, tan 30° = 0.577350.
Result:
| sin | 0.5000 |
|---|---|
| cos | 0.8660 |
| tan | 0.5774 |
| csc = 1/sin | 2.0000 |
| sec = 1/cos | 1.1547 |
| cot = 1/tan | 1.7321 |
| Reference angle (degrees) | 30.0000 |
| Coterminal angle in 0 to 360° | 30.0000 |
Frequently asked questions
What is sin 30°?
Exactly 0.5.
Why does my calculator give a strange sin(30)?
It is probably in radians: sin(30 rad) ≈ −0.988.
