Prayer Times Calculator (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha) by TheCalcTools

How the Prayer Times Calculator (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha) works

Prayer times follow the Sun. Fajr begins when the Sun is a set angle below the horizon before sunrise (for example 18°), Dhuhr just after solar noon, Asr when an object’s shadow equals its length (or twice its length in the Hanafi school) plus its noon shadow, Maghrib at sunset and Isha at a set angle after sunset.

Methods differ in these angles, so mosque timetables vary by a few minutes. Many mosques add a few minutes of caution (ihtiyat) to Dhuhr and Maghrib. At high latitudes in summer the Sun may never reach the Fajr or Isha angle; special rules then apply. Follow your local mosque’s timetable.

The formula

cos H = (sin α − sin φ sin δ) ÷ (cos φ cos δ); time = solar noon ± 4 min × HAsr altitude α = acot(k + tan|φ − δ|), k = 1 or 2
