OPS Calculator (On-Base Plus Slugging) by TheCalcTools
How the OPS Calculator (On-Base Plus Slugging) works
OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF) measures how often a batter reaches base. SLG = total bases ÷ at-bats measures power, with singles 1, doubles 2, triples 3 and home runs 4 bases.
OPS adds them together: a simple, widely used measure of overall hitting. Around .800 is good and .900 or more excellent in MLB.
The formula
OPS = OBP + SLG; total bases = H + 2B + 2×3B + 3×HR
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| At-bats | 520 |
|---|---|
| Hits | 152 |
| Doubles | 31 |
| Triples | 3 |
| Home runs | 27 |
| Walks | 61 |
| Hit by pitch | 5 |
| Sacrifice flies | 4 |
- OBP 0.369 + SLG 0.519 = OPS 0.889.
Result:
| OPS | 0.889 |
|---|---|
| On-base percentage (OBP) | 0.369 |
| Slugging (SLG) | 0.519 |
| Batting average | 0.292 |
| Total bases | 270 |
| Isolated power (ISO) | 0.227 |
