How the Baseball Batting Average, OBP, SLG and OPS Calculator works
Batting average is hits divided by at-bats. On-base percentage adds walks and hit-by-pitches and divides by plate appearances that count (AB + BB + HBP + SF).
Slugging percentage weights hits by bases: singles 1, doubles 2, triples 3, home runs 4, divided by at-bats. OPS adds OBP and SLG into one quick measure of offence.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| At-bats (AB) | 520 |
|---|---|
| Singles | 98 |
| Doubles | 32 |
| Triples | 3 |
| Home runs | 27 |
| Walks (BB) | 61 |
| Hit by pitch (HBP) | 5 |
| Sacrifice flies (SF) | 4 |
- Hits: 98 + 32 + 3 + 27 = 160; AVG = 160 ÷ 520 = 0.308.
- OBP = (160 + 61 + 5) ÷ (520 + 61 + 5 + 4) = 0.383. SLG = 279 ÷ 520 = 0.537.
- OPS = 0.920.
Result:
| Batting average (AVG) | 0.308 |
|---|---|
| On-base percentage (OBP) | 0.383 |
| Slugging percentage (SLG) | 0.537 |
| OPS (OBP + SLG) | 0.920 |
| Hits | 160 |
| Total bases | 279 |
| Isolated power (ISO) | 0.229 |
