Hydrostatic Pressure Calculator (Pressure at Depth) by TheCalcTools
How the Hydrostatic Pressure Calculator (Pressure at Depth) works
Pressure in a still liquid grows linearly with depth: P = ρgh above the surface pressure. Gauge pressure is what a tyre or depth gauge reads; absolute pressure adds the atmosphere.
In seawater pressure rises by about 1 atmosphere every 10 m, which is why divers must manage gas volumes and decompression.
The formula
P = P₀ + ρ g h
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Depth (m) | 10 |
|---|---|
| Liquid | Seawater (1,025 kg/m³) |
| Pressure at the surface (kPa) | 101.325 |
| Gravity (m/s²) | 9.80665 |
- At 10 m in seawater: gauge 100.52 kPa, absolute 201.84 kPa (1.992 atm).
Result:
| Gauge pressure (kPa) | 100.52 |
|---|---|
| Absolute pressure (kPa) | 201.84 |
| Absolute pressure (bar) | 2.018 |
| Absolute pressure (psi) | 29.27 |
| Absolute pressure (atm) | 1.992 |
