Gay-Lussac's Law Calculator (P₁/T₁ = P₂/T₂) by TheCalcTools
How the Gay-Lussac's Law Calculator (P₁/T₁ = P₂/T₂) works
At constant volume, the pressure of a gas is proportional to its absolute temperature. This is why tyre pressure rises on a hot day or after driving.
Temperatures are converted to kelvin inside the formula.
The formula
P₁ ÷ T₁ = P₂ ÷ T₂ at constant volume (T in kelvin)
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Solve for | Final pressure P₂ |
|---|---|
| Temperatures in | °C |
| Initial pressure P₁ | 2.2 |
| Initial temperature T₁ | 20 |
| Final pressure P₂ | 2.5 |
| Final temperature T₂ | 60 |
- Using the default values: P₂ = 2.50019.
Result:
| Answer | P₂ = 2.50019 |

Frequently asked questions
Why does a sealed can explode in a fire?
The volume is fixed, so heating raises the pressure in proportion to the absolute temperature until the can fails.
