Charles's Law Calculator (V₁/T₁ = V₂/T₂) by TheCalcTools
How the Charles's Law Calculator (V₁/T₁ = V₂/T₂) works
At constant pressure, the volume of a gas is proportional to its absolute temperature. Temperatures must be in kelvin inside the formula; the calculator converts °C for you.
A balloon taken from a warm room into the cold shrinks for this reason.
The formula
V₁ ÷ T₁ = V₂ ÷ T₂ at constant pressure (T in kelvin)
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Solve for | Final volume V₂ |
|---|---|
| Temperatures in | °C |
| Initial volume V₁ | 2 |
| Initial temperature T₁ | 25 |
| Final volume V₂ | 2.5 |
| Final temperature T₂ | 100 |
- Using the default values: V₂ = 2.5031.
Result:
| Answer | V₂ = 2.5031 |

Frequently asked questions
Why must I use kelvin?
The law describes proportionality from absolute zero. Using °C would give wrong answers, for example a volume of zero at 0 °C.
