Combined Gas Law Calculator (P₁V₁/T₁ = P₂V₂/T₂) by TheCalcTools
How the Combined Gas Law Calculator (P₁V₁/T₁ = P₂V₂/T₂) works
The combined gas law merges Boyle’s, Charles’s and Gay-Lussac’s laws for a fixed amount of gas whose pressure, volume and temperature all change.
Use the same pressure and volume units on both sides; temperatures are converted to kelvin.
The formula
P₁V₁ ÷ T₁ = P₂V₂ ÷ T₂ (T in kelvin)
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Solve for | Final volume V₂ |
|---|---|
| Temperatures in | °C |
| P₁ | 1 |
| V₁ | 22.4 |
| T₁ | 0 |
| P₂ | 2 |
| V₂ | 12 |
| T₂ | 25 |
- Using the default values: V₂ = 12.2251.
Result:
| Answer | V₂ = 12.2251 |
|---|---|
| P₁V₁/T₁ | 0.0820 |
Frequently asked questions
When can I use it?
When the amount of gas stays the same, for example a sealed container or a balloon. If gas is added or removed, use the ideal gas law.
