How the Brix to Specific Gravity Calculator (and Back) works
Brix measures dissolved sugar as grams per 100 g of solution; specific gravity is density relative to water. The conversions use widely used polynomial fits: SG = 1 + Brix ÷ (258.6 − Brix ÷ 258.2 × 227.1), and the cubic fit for the reverse.
Potential alcohol assumes all the sugar ferments to a final gravity of 1.000, which dry wines approach; beers finish higher.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Convert | Brix to specific gravity |
|---|---|
| Degrees Brix | 22 |
| Specific gravity | 1.09 |
- 22 °Brix is a specific gravity of 1.0920, for a potential 12.1% ABV.
Result:
| Specific gravity | 1.0920 |
|---|---|
| Degrees Brix | 22.00 |
| Gravity points | 92.0 |
| Potential ABV if fermented to 1.000 | 12.1% |
