Density Calculator by TheCalcTools

How the Density Calculator works

Enter the mass in kilograms and the volume in litres.

Density is mass divided by volume.

Specific gravity compares the density with water at about 1 g/cm³.

The formula

ρ = m ÷ V1 L = 0.001 m³

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Mass (kg)7.85
Volume (litres)1
  1. Density = 7.85 kg ÷ 0.001 m³ = 7,850 kg/m³.
  2. In g/cm³ that is 7.85, a specific gravity of 7.85.

Result:

Density (kg/m³)7,850.0
Density (g/cm³)7.850
Density (lb/ft³)490.06
Specific gravity (water = 1)7.850

Frequently asked questions

Why does ice float?

Ice has a density of about 917 kg/m³, below liquid water at 1,000, so it floats with about 8% above the surface.

What is the density of steel?

About 7,850 kg/m³, which is the default example.
