Concentration Converter (Molarity, g/L, % w/v, ppm) by TheCalcTools
How the Concentration Converter (Molarity, g/L, % w/v, ppm) works
Everything goes through grams per litre: molarity × molar mass = g/L; % w/v is grams per 100 mL, so 1% w/v = 10 g/L; mg/L equals ppm only for dilute water-based solutions with a density near 1 g/mL.
0.9% saline (0.9 g NaCl per 100 mL) is 9 g/L, or 0.154 M.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Concentration | 0.9 |
|---|---|
| Unit | % w/v (g per 100 mL) |
| Molar mass of solute (g/mol) | 58.44 |
- 0.9% w/v NaCl = 9 g/L = 0.1540 mol/L = 9,000 mg/L.
Result:
| Molarity (mol/L) | 0.1540 |
|---|---|
| g/L (same as mg/mL) | 9.0000 |
| % w/v | 0.9000 |
| mg/L (ppm in dilute water) | 9,000.0 |
| mmol/L | 154.004 |
Frequently asked questions
Is ppm the same as mg/L?
For dilute aqueous solutions, yes, because one litre of water weighs about one kilogram. For other solvents or concentrated solutions, convert using the density.
