Brix to Specific Gravity Calculator (and Back) by TheCalcTools

How the Brix to Specific Gravity Calculator (and Back) works

Brix measures dissolved sugar as grams per 100 g of solution; specific gravity is density relative to water. The conversions use widely used polynomial fits: SG = 1 + Brix ÷ (258.6 − Brix ÷ 258.2 × 227.1), and the cubic fit for the reverse.

Potential alcohol assumes all the sugar ferments to a final gravity of 1.000, which dry wines approach; beers finish higher.

The formula

SG = 1 + Bx ÷ (258.6 − (Bx ÷ 258.2) × 227.1)

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

ConvertBrix to specific gravity
Degrees Brix22
Specific gravity1.09
  1. 22 °Brix is a specific gravity of 1.0920, for a potential 12.1% ABV.

Result:

Specific gravity1.0920
Degrees Brix22.00
Gravity points92.0
Potential ABV if fermented to 1.00012.1%
