3D Printing Filament Calculator (Length, Weight and Cost) by TheCalcTools
How the 3D Printing Filament Calculator (Length, Weight and Cost) works
Filament is a long cylinder: volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × length, and weight = volume × density. Densities vary a little by brand and colour; these are typical values.
Your slicer reports the length or weight a print uses; multiply by the cost per gram for the material cost.
The formula
Weight (g) = π (d/2)² × length × density
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Filament length (m) | 25 |
|---|---|
| Diameter | 1.75 mm |
| Material (typical density) | PLA (1.24 g/cm³) |
| Spool price | $22 |
| Spool weight (kg) | 1 |
- 25 m of 1.75 mm PLA weighs 74.6 g and costs $1.64 from a $22 spool.
- A 1 kg spool holds 335 m.
Result:
| Weight (g) | 74.6 |
|---|---|
| Cost | $1.64 |
| Metres on a spool | 335 |
| Cost per metre | $0.07 |
