Qibla Direction Calculator (Degrees from North) by TheCalcTools
How the Qibla Direction Calculator (Degrees from North) works
The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba along the shortest path over the Earth’s surface (a great circle). The bearing is measured clockwise from true north.
A magnetic compass points to magnetic north, which differs from true north by the magnetic declination at your location. Enter your local declination (from a government geomagnetic model) to get the compass reading.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Your latitude (north positive) | 33.6844 |
|---|---|
| Your longitude (east positive) | 73.0479 |
| Magnetic declination (east positive, optional) | 0 ° |
- From Islamabad (33.68° N, 73.05° E) the Qibla is 255.9° from true north, toward the West-southwest.
- The Kaaba is about 3,528 km away.
Result:
| Qibla bearing from true north | 255.9 |
|---|---|
| Bearing on a magnetic compass | 255.9 |
| Direction | West-southwest |
| Distance to the Kaaba (km) | 3,528 |
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my latitude and longitude?
Long-press your location in a maps app to see the coordinates. Islamabad is about 33.68° N, 73.05° E.
Why is the Qibla from North America to the northeast?
The shortest path on a globe to Makkah from North America runs over the North Atlantic, so the great-circle bearing points northeast, not southeast as a flat map suggests.
