Boyle's Law Calculator (P₁V₁ = P₂V₂) by TheCalcTools
How the Boyle's Law Calculator (P₁V₁ = P₂V₂) works
At constant temperature, the pressure of a fixed amount of gas is inversely proportional to its volume: halve the volume and the pressure doubles.
Use the same units on both sides (for example atm and litres). Temperatures do not appear because they are constant.
The formula
P₁ × V₁ = P₂ × V₂ at constant temperature
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Solve for | Final pressure P₂ |
|---|---|
| Initial pressure P₁ | 1 |
| Initial volume V₁ | 10 |
| Final pressure P₂ | 2 |
| Final volume V₂ | 4 |
- Using the default values: P₂ = 2.5.
Result:
| Answer | P₂ = 2.5 |
|---|---|
| P × V (constant) | 10.0000 |
Frequently asked questions
Does Boyle's law work for real gases?
It is accurate for gases at moderate pressures and temperatures well above their boiling points. At high pressures real gases deviate.
