How the Rice and Pasta Portion Calculator works

Enter how many people you are cooking for, the food and the portion size.

A standard portion is about 75 g of dry rice or 100 g of dried pasta per person.

Dry rice roughly triples in weight when cooked and pasta more than doubles.

The formula

dry weight = people × portioncooked rice ≈ 3 × dry weight; cooked pasta ≈ 2.25 × dry weight

Frequently asked questions

Is the water amount exact?

It is a guide. Absorption-method rice uses about 1.5 times its weight in water, though it varies by variety. Pasta is boiled in plenty of water, about 1 litre per 100 g.

Does it apply to other grains?

Roughly. Quinoa and couscous cook up to about 3 times their dry weight.
