How the India Income Tax Calculator FY 2026-27 (New Regime) works

Under the new regime for FY 2026-27, income up to ₹4 lakh is not taxed, then rates step up by 5% every ₹4 lakh: 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Salaried people and pensioners first deduct a ₹75,000 standard deduction.

The section 87A rebate (up to ₹60,000) makes tax nil when taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less, so a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief limits the tax to the income above ₹12 lakh.

A surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh (10%), ₹1 crore (15%) and ₹2 crore (25%, the cap in the new regime), with marginal relief at each threshold. A 4% health and education cess is added to tax plus surcharge.

The formula

Taxable = gross − ₹75,000 − allowed deductions; tax = slab tax − rebate (nil up to ₹12 lakh)Total = (tax + surcharge) × 1.04

Frequently asked questions

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?

Yes, in the new regime taxable income up to ₹12 lakh has nil tax after the 87A rebate. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, salary up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Special-rate income such as capital gains is treated differently.

Should I choose the old regime instead?

The old regime allows deductions like 80C, HRA and home-loan interest but has higher rates. If your deductions are large, compare both. The new regime is the default.

Did Budget 2026 change the slabs?

No. The new-regime slabs and the ₹12 lakh rebate limit introduced for FY 2025-26 continue for FY 2026-27.
