Video File Size and Bitrate Calculator by TheCalcTools

How the Video File Size and Bitrate Calculator works

File size = total bitrate (video + audio) × duration ÷ 8 bits per byte. A 10-minute video at 8 Mbps is about 600 MB.

To hit a size limit, divide the size in bits by the duration and subtract the audio bitrate. Container overhead adds roughly 1 to 2%.

The formula

Size (MB) = (video bps + audio bps) × seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 10⁶

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

FindFile size from bitrate
Video bitrate (Mbps)8
Audio bitrate (kbps)192
Duration (minutes)10
Target file size (MB)500
  1. (8 Mbps + 192 kbps) × 600 s ÷ 8 = 614.4 MB.

Result:

Result614.4 MB
File size (GB)0.61
Size per hour (GB)3.69

Frequently asked questions

What bitrate should I use for 1080p?

Around 4 to 8 Mbps for streaming-quality H.264 1080p at 30 fps, less with HEVC or AV1. Platforms publish their recommended upload bitrates.
