Image File Size Calculator (Uncompressed and Megapixels) by TheCalcTools
How the Image File Size Calculator (Uncompressed and Megapixels) works
Uncompressed size = width × height × bits per pixel ÷ 8. This is also the memory an image needs once opened.
Compressed formats store far less; JPEG ratios of 10:1 are typical for photos, but the real size depends on the content.
The formula
Bytes = width × height × bit depth ÷ 8
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Width (pixels) | 6000 |
|---|---|
| Height (pixels) | 4000 |
| Colour depth | 24-bit colour (8 bits × RGB) |
| Compression ratio (e.g. 10 for JPEG) | 10 |
- 6,000 × 4,000 × 24 bits ÷ 8 = 72 MB uncompressed (24 MP).
Result:
| Uncompressed size (MB) | 72.00 |
|---|---|
| Megapixels | 24.0 |
| Estimated compressed size (MB) | 7.20 |
| Print size at 300 DPI (inches) | 20.0 × 13.3 |
Frequently asked questions
How big can I print a 24-megapixel photo?
At 300 DPI, 6,000 × 4,000 pixels prints at 20 × 13.3 inches.
