Storage Unit Converter (GB vs GiB) by TheCalcTools
How the Storage Unit Converter (GB vs GiB) works
Enter a size and its unit.
The calculator converts it to bytes using exact factors: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes.
It then divides by each unit.
The formula
1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Value | 500 |
|---|---|
| Unit | GB |
- 500 GB = 500,000,000,000 bytes.
- Divided by 1,073,741,824 that is 465.6613 GiB.
- In terabytes: 0.5000 TB.
Result:
| Bytes | 500,000,000,000 |
|---|---|
| GB (10⁹ bytes) | 500.0000 |
| GiB (2³⁰ bytes) | 465.6613 |
| TB (10¹² bytes) | 0.5000 |
| TiB (2⁴⁰ bytes) | 0.4547 |
| GiB as % of GB | 93.13% |
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 500 GB drive show about 465 GB?
Drive makers use decimal GB (10⁹ bytes) while some operating systems report binary GiB (2³⁰ bytes) but label them GB. 500 GB is about 465.7 GiB.
Which standard defines the binary prefixes?
The IEC defined KiB, MiB, GiB and so on to remove the ambiguity.
