How the SSD Lifespan Calculator works
Enter the TBW rating from the drive’s datasheet, how much data you write each day and the write amplification factor.
Write amplification is how much extra the controller writes internally. Use 1.1–3 depending on workload.
Dividing the endurance by the effective daily writes gives the number of days.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Endurance rating (TBW) | 600 |
|---|---|
| Data written per day (GB) | 50 |
| Write amplification | 1.5 |
- Effective daily writes = 50 × 1.5 = 75 GB.
- 600 TBW = 600,000 GB, which lasts 8,000 days.
- That is about 21.9 years.
Result:
| Estimated lifespan (years) | 21.9 |
|---|---|
| Days | 8,000 |
| Drive writes per day | 0.228 |
Frequently asked questions
Does the drive stop working when TBW is reached?
Not necessarily. TBW is the manufacturer’s guaranteed endurance. Many drives continue beyond it, but reliability is no longer warranted.
What is a typical daily write volume?
Light desktop use is 10–30 GB a day. Databases and video work can be hundreds of GB.
