How the Stock Average Calculator (Average Down or Up) works
Average cost = total spent ÷ total shares = Σ(price × quantity) ÷ Σ quantity. Buying more at a lower price ‘averages down’.
Averaging down lowers the break-even price but increases the money at risk in one stock. Fees are not included; add them to the prices for accuracy.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Purchase prices | 150, 120, 95 |
|---|---|
| Shares bought at each price (same order) | 10, 15, 25 |
| Current price | $110 |
- 150 × 10 + 120 × 15 + 95 × 25 = $5,675.00 for 50 shares, an average of $113.50.
- At $110 the position shows -$175.00.
Result:
| Average price per share | $113.50 |
|---|---|
| Total shares | 50 |
| Total cost | $5,675.00 |
| Profit or loss at the current price | -$175.00 |
| Return | -3.08% |
Frequently asked questions
Should I average down?
Only if your reason for owning the stock still holds. Averaging down into a failing company multiplies losses.
