Required Run Rate Calculator (Cricket Chase) by TheCalcTools

How the Required Run Rate Calculator (Cricket Chase) works

Runs needed are the target minus the current score. Balls left are the total balls in the innings minus the balls already bowled.

The required rate is runs needed divided by overs left. Compare it with the current rate: if the required rate is much higher, the batting side must accelerate, which is harder with fewer wickets in hand.

The formula

Required run rate = (target − score) ÷ (balls left ÷ 6)

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Target to win287
Current score150
Overs completed30
Extra balls0
Total overs in the innings50 overs (ODI)
Wickets lost3
  1. Runs needed: 287 − 150 = 137. Balls left: 300 − 180 = 120 (20 overs).
  2. Required rate = 137 ÷ 20 = 6.85 per over, against a current rate of 5.00.

Result:

Required run rate6.85
Runs needed137
Balls left120
Current run rate5.00
Runs needed per ball1.14
Wickets in hand7

Frequently asked questions

Is the target one more than the other team's score?

Yes. To win, the chasing team must pass the first team’s total, so the target is their score plus one.

What about rain-reduced matches?

Rain-affected targets are set by the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, which uses published resource tables. Enter the revised target and overs here once the officials announce them.
