Rent Split Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Rent Split Calculator works
Enter the total rent and each bedroom’s size in square feet.
Each person’s share is proportional to their room’s size.
Set unused rooms to zero. Adjust by hand for private bathrooms or balconies.
The formula
Share = rent × room size ÷ total room size
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Total monthly rent | $2400 |
|---|---|
| Room 1 size (sq ft) | 180 |
| Room 2 size (sq ft) | 140 |
| Room 3 size (sq ft) | 120 |
| Room 4 size (sq ft; 0 if none) | 0 |
- Total area = 440 sq ft. Room 1: 2,400 × 180 ÷ 440 = $981.82.
- Room 2 pays $763.64; room 3 pays $654.55.
Result:
| Room 1 pays | $981.82 |
|---|---|
| Room 2 pays | $763.64 |
| Room 3 pays | $654.55 |
| Room 4 pays | $0.00 |
Frequently asked questions
Is splitting by size fair?
It’s a good starting point. Many roommates adjust for private bathrooms, natural light or closet space.
What about shared areas?
Common areas are typically excluded from the sizes so every roommate benefits equally.
