The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Original servings | 4 |
|---|---|
| Desired servings | 10 |
| Ingredient 1 amount | 250 |
| Ingredient 2 amount | 2 |
| Ingredient 3 amount | 0.5 |
| Ingredient 4 amount | 1.5 |
- Factor = 10 ÷ 4 = 2.50.
- 250 becomes 625, 2 becomes 5, 0.5 becomes 1.25 and 1.5 becomes 3.75.
Result:
| Scale factor | 2.500 |
|---|---|
| Ingredient 1 | 625.00 |
| Ingredient 2 | 5.00 |
| Ingredient 3 | 1.25 |
| Ingredient 4 | 3.75 |
Frequently asked questions
Do all ingredients scale linearly?
Mostly, but not salt, spices, leavening and cooking time. Scale those more cautiously and taste as you go.
What about pan size?
When you change the batch, change the pan so depth stays similar. Otherwise baking times and results change.
