How the Ratio Simplifier Calculator works

Enter the two parts of the ratio as whole numbers.

The calculator finds their greatest common divisor.

Dividing both parts by it gives the simplest equivalent ratio.

The formula

A : B = (A ÷ g) : (B ÷ g), where g = gcd(A, B)

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

A24
B36
  1. The greatest common divisor of 24 and 36 is 12.
  2. 24 ÷ 12 = 2 and 36 ÷ 12 = 3, so the ratio is 2 : 3.
  3. A is 40.0% of the total and B is 60.0%.

Result:

Simplified A2
Simplified B3
Simplified ratio2 : 3
A as share of total40.0%
B as share of total60.0%

Frequently asked questions
