Long Division Calculator (Quotient and Remainder) by TheCalcTools

How the Long Division Calculator (Quotient and Remainder) works

Long division finds how many times the divisor fits into the dividend (the quotient) and what is left over (the remainder): dividend = quotient × divisor + remainder.

Continuing past the decimal point gives the decimal digits. For negative numbers this calculator truncates toward zero, as most calculators and programming languages do.

The formula

a = q × b + r, 0 ≤ |r| < |b|

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Dividend (number being divided)1475
Divisor12
  1. 1475 ÷ 12 = 122 remainder 11.
  2. Check: 122 × 12 + 11 = 1475. Decimal: 122.91(6).

Result:

Quotient122
Remainder11
Exact decimal122.91(6)
Check122 × 12 + 11 = 1475
As a mixed number122 11/12
