Quilt Binding Calculator (Strips and Fabric Needed) by TheCalcTools
How the Quilt Binding Calculator (Strips and Fabric Needed) works
Binding goes around the whole quilt, so its length is the perimeter plus extra for mitred corners and the final join (10 to 12 inches is typical).
Divide by the usable width of the fabric to get the number of strips, and multiply by the strip width for the fabric length.
The formula
Length = 2(W + L) + extra; strips = ⌈length ÷ usable width⌉
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Quilt width (in) | 60 |
|---|---|
| Quilt length (in) | 72 |
| Binding strip width (in) | 2.5 |
| Usable fabric width (in) | 40 |
| Extra for corners and joining (in) | 12 |
- A 60 × 72 in quilt needs 276 in of binding: 7 strips of 2.5 in, 0.49 yards of fabric.
Result:
| Binding length (in) | 276 |
|---|---|
| Strips to cut | 7 |
| Fabric needed (in) | 17.5 |
| Fabric needed (yards) | 0.49 |
