How the Tip and Bill Split Calculator works
Enter the bill before tip, the tip percentage you want to leave and how many people share the bill. The tip is the bill times the percentage; the total adds the two; each person pays the total divided by the number of people.
If you choose to round up, each person’s share is rounded up to the next whole amount. That gives a slightly bigger tip, so the tip shown is the total paid minus the bill. Enter the bill before tax if you tip on the pre-tax amount, which is the usual custom in the US.

A $86.40 bill, 18% tip, shared by 3 people:

Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
Customs vary by country and service. In the US, 15 to 20% of the pre-tax bill is typical at sit-down restaurants. In many other countries tipping is smaller or optional, so check local norms.
Should I tip on the pre-tax amount?
Many people do, and the calculator works either way depending on the bill amount you enter.
Can I split unevenly?
Not here. For different shares, calculate each person’s part of the bill, then use the percentage calculator for each tip.
Why does rounding up raise the tip?
Rounding each share up adds a few cents or dollars. The tip shown is the actual extra you pay above the bill.
