Paver Base Calculator (Gravel, Sand and Pavers) by TheCalcTools
How the Paver Base Calculator (Gravel, Sand and Pavers) works
Area = length × width. Pick the compacted base depth for the use.
Gravel volume = area × depth, plus an allowance because loose gravel compacts. Sand is a bedding layer of about 1 inch.
Pavers are area ÷ the area of one paver, plus waste for cuts.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Length (ft) | 20 |
|---|---|
| Width (ft) | 12 |
| Compacted base depth (in) | 6 in (patio, light vehicles) |
| Bedding sand depth (in) | 1 |
| Extra for compaction | 15 % |
| Paver size | 4 × 8 in (4.5 per sq ft) |
| Paver waste | 10 % |
| Tons of base per cubic yard | 1.4 |
- 20 × 12 = 240 sq ft. A 6 in base needs 240 × 0.5 ÷ 27 × 1.15 = 5.11 cu yd, about 7.16 tons.
- Sand 0.74 cu yd. 4 × 8 in pavers: 1,188.
Result:
| Area (sq ft) | 240 |
|---|---|
| Base gravel (cubic yards) | 5.11 |
| Base gravel (tons) | 7.16 |
| Bedding sand (cubic yards) | 0.74 |
| Pavers to buy | 1,188 |
Frequently asked questions
How deep should a paver base be?
4 to 6 inches for walkways and patios, and 8 to 12 inches for driveways. Use more in soft or clay soil and in freezing climates.
What is the best base material?
Crushed stone with fines, often called 3/4 inch minus or road base, compacts to a firm layer.
