How the 5G NR Path Loss Calculator (3GPP UMa) works
Enter the carrier frequency, distance and whether there is a line of sight.
The calculator uses the UMa formulas from 3GPP TR 38.901: PL_LOS = 28.0 + 22 log d + 20 log f_c and PL’_NLOS = 13.54 + 39.08 log d + 20 log f_c − 0.6 (h_UT − 1.5).
Enter the maximum allowable path loss from your link budget to get the range.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Carrier frequency (GHz) | 3.5 |
|---|---|
| 3D distance (m) | 500 |
| Condition | Non-line of sight (NLOS) |
| UE height (m) | 1.5 |
| Maximum allowable path loss (dB) | 125 |
- NLOS at 3.5 GHz and 500 m: 13.54 + 39.08 × 2.699 + 20 × 0.544 − 0 = 129.9 dB.
- LOS gives 98.3 dB. With a MAPL of 125 dB, the NLOS range is about 375 m.
Result:
| LOS path loss (dB, up to breakpoint) | 98.3 |
|---|---|
| NLOS path loss (dB) | 129.9 |
| Selected path loss (dB) | 129.9 |
| Range at the maximum path loss (m) | 375 |
Frequently asked questions
Is the LOS formula valid at any distance?
It applies up to the breakpoint distance, which depends on antenna heights and frequency (several hundred metres for typical UMa). Beyond it, the slope changes to 40 log d.
Does it include penetration loss?
No. Add outdoor-to-indoor and body losses in the link budget before computing the maximum path loss.
