How the Gravitational Force Calculator works
Enter the two masses and the distance between their centres.
The force is proportional to the product of the masses.
It falls with the square of the distance.
The formula
F = G m₁ m₂ ÷ r²G = 6.6743 × 10⁻¹¹ N·m²/kg²
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Mass 1 (kg) | 5.972e+24 |
|---|---|
| Mass 2 (kg) | 7.348e+22 |
| Distance between centres (m) | 3.844e+08 |
- F = 6.6743 × 10⁻¹¹ × 5.972 × 10²⁴ × 7.348 × 10²² ÷ (3.844 × 10⁸)².
- = 1.982 × 10^20.
Result:
| Force (N) | 1.982 × 10^20 |
|---|---|
| Force as a plain number (N) | 198,211,072,907,925,192,704 |
Frequently asked questions
Why don't we feel gravity from everyday objects?
G is tiny, so a force is noticeable only when at least one mass is planet-sized.
Are the defaults real?
Yes. They are the masses of Earth and the Moon and their mean separation, giving about 2 × 10²⁰ N.
