How the Graphing Calculator (Plot Functions Online) works

Enter a function using x, for example x^2 − 2x − 3, sin(x)/x or 2^x. Implied multiplication (2x, 3sin(x)) and the functions sin, cos, tan, ln, log, sqrt, abs and exp are supported.

The graph samples 600 points across your x range. Zeros are found where the function changes sign and refined by bisection, so a zero where the curve only touches the axis without crossing may not be listed. Minimum and maximum are the lowest and highest sampled values.

Add a second function g(x) to compare curves. The vertical scale adapts to the values, ignoring extreme spikes near vertical asymptotes.

Worked example

For x^2 − 2x − 3 from −5 to 5, the zeros are −1 and 3, the minimum is −4 at x = 1, and f(3) = 0.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find where two curves meet?

Enter f(x) − g(x) as the function: its zeros are the intersection points.

Can it plot implicit equations like circles?

No. It plots y = f(x). For a circle, plot the two halves sqrt(r^2 − x^2) and −sqrt(r^2 − x^2).
