How the Ethereum Gas Fee Calculator (Gwei to ETH and USD) works
Since EIP-1559 every Ethereum transaction pays gas used × (base fee + priority tip). The base fee is burned and the tip goes to the validator. 1 gwei = 10⁻⁹ ETH.
A plain ETH transfer always uses 21,000 gas; contract interactions use more depending on the code. Wallets show the live base fee.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Transaction type | ETH transfer (21,000 gas) |
|---|---|
| Gas used | 100000 |
| Base fee (gwei) | 8 |
| Priority tip (gwei) | 1 |
| ETH price | $3000 |
- A 21,000-gas transfer at 8 + 1 gwei costs 0.000189 ETH, or $0.57 at 3,000.
Result:
| Fee (ETH) | 0.000189 |
|---|---|
| Fee in money | $0.57 |
| Burned (base fee part, ETH) | 0.000168 |
| Gas used | 21,000 |
Frequently asked questions
Why do fees spike?
The base fee rises automatically when blocks are more than half full and falls when they are emptier.
