Field of View Calculator (Angle of View and Scene Width) by TheCalcTools

How the Field of View Calculator (Angle of View and Scene Width) works

The angle of view of a rectilinear lens is 2 × atan(sensor dimension ÷ (2 × focal length)). The scene width at distance d is 2d × tan(angle ÷ 2), equivalent to d × sensor width ÷ focal length.

Shorter focal lengths and larger sensors see wider. Close focusing changes the effective focal length slightly.

The formula

AOV = 2 atan(d ÷ 2f); width = distance × sensor width ÷ f

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

SensorFull frame (36 × 24 mm)
Focal length (mm)24
Subject distance (m)10
  1. 24 mm on full frame sees 73.7° across.
  2. At 10 m that covers 15.00 × 10.00 m.

Result:

Horizontal angle of view (degrees)73.7
Vertical angle of view (degrees)53.1
Diagonal angle of view (degrees)84.1
Scene width covered at the distance (m)15.00
Scene height covered (m)10.00

Frequently asked questions
