Burn Rate and Runway Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Burn Rate and Runway Calculator works
Gross burn is total monthly spending; net burn subtracts revenue. Runway is cash divided by net burn: how many months the company survives if nothing changes.
Fundraising usually takes 6 to 9 months, so many founders start raising with 12 to 18 months of runway left.
The formula
Net burn = expenses − revenue; runway = cash ÷ net burn
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Cash in the bank | $1.2e+06 |
|---|---|
| Monthly revenue | $45000 |
| Monthly expenses | $145000 |
| Starting from | 2026-10-17 |
- Spending 145,000 against 45,000 of revenue burns $100,000 a month.
- 1,200,000 of cash lasts 12.0 months, until about 17 October 2027.
Result:
| Gross burn (monthly expenses) | $145,000 |
|---|---|
| Net burn | $100,000 |
| Runway (months) | 12.0 |
| Cash runs out around | 17 October 2027 |
| Cut needed for 18 months of runway | $33,333 |
Frequently asked questions
Should I include revenue growth?
This calculator assumes flat numbers. Growing revenue extends runway; a growing team shortens it, so re-run it monthly.
