How the Body Adiposity Index (BAI) Calculator works
BAI estimates body fat percentage directly: hip circumference in centimetres divided by height in metres to the power 1.5, minus 18. It was developed and validated against DXA scans in Mexican-American and African-American adults.
Later studies found BAI is not more accurate than BMI for many groups, especially at the extremes of body fat. Treat it as one estimate among several.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Hip circumference | 100 |
|---|---|
| Height | 175 |
- 100 ÷ 1.75^1.5 − 18 = 25.2% body fat.
Result:
| Body adiposity index (body fat %) | 25.2 |
|---|
