How the A Body Shape Index (ABSI) Calculator works
ABSI divides waist circumference (in metres) by BMI to the power 2/3 times height to the power 1/2. It captures how much weight is carried around the waist, beyond what BMI shows.
Typical adult values are around 0.07 to 0.09. Higher ABSI for your age and sex was associated with higher mortality in the original study; z-scores need age- and sex-specific reference tables.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Waist circumference | 90 |
|---|---|
| Height | 175 |
| Weight | 78 |
- BMI 25.5; ABSI = 0.90 ÷ (25.5^(2/3) × 1.75^0.5) = 0.0786.
Result:
| ABSI | 0.0786 |
|---|---|
| BMI | 25.5 |
Frequently asked questions
Is a higher ABSI bad?
In population studies, a higher ABSI relative to people of the same age and sex was linked to higher risk, independent of BMI.
