How the Basketball True Shooting and eFG% Calculator works
Points are 2 for each field goal, 1 more for each three-pointer and 1 for each free throw.
Effective field goal percentage gives a three-pointer 1.5 times the value of a two. True shooting percentage also counts free throws, using 0.44 free-throw attempts per possession, the factor used by the NBA and Basketball-Reference.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Field goals made | 9 |
|---|---|
| Field goals attempted | 18 |
| Three-pointers made | 3 |
| Three-pointers attempted | 7 |
| Free throws made | 5 |
| Free throws attempted | 6 |
- Points: 2 × 9 + 3 + 5 = 26.
- TS% = 26 ÷ (2 × (18 + 0.44 × 6)) = 63.0%. eFG% = (9 + 1.5) ÷ 18 = 58.3%.
Result:
| True shooting % (TS%) | 63.0% |
|---|---|
| Effective FG% (eFG%) | 58.3% |
| Field goal % | 50.0% |
| Three-point % | 42.9% |
| Free throw % | 83.3% |
| Points scored | 26 |
