How the Ideal and Adjusted Body Weight Calculator (Devine) works
The Devine formula gives ideal body weight as 50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) plus 2.3 kg for each inch of height over 5 feet. It was designed for drug dosing, not as a health target.
For people well above their ideal weight, some drugs are dosed on adjusted body weight: ideal weight plus 40% of the excess. Always follow the drug-specific guidance.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Sex | Male |
|---|---|
| Height | 175 |
| Actual weight | 110 |
- 175 cm = 68.9 in: IBW = 50 + 2.3 × 8.9 = 70.5 kg.
- AdjBW = 70.5 + 0.4 × (110 − 70.5) = 86.3 kg.
Result:
| Ideal body weight (kg) | 70.5 |
|---|---|
| Adjusted body weight (kg) | 86.3 |
| Actual weight as % of ideal | 156% |
| Which weight is usually used | Adjusted (actual weight is above 120% of ideal) |
