How the Acceleration Calculator works
Enter the starting velocity, the final velocity and the time taken.
Acceleration is the change in velocity divided by time.
Distance assumes constant acceleration, so it uses the average velocity.
The formula
a = (v − u) ÷ ts = (u + v) ÷ 2 × t
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Initial velocity (m/s) | 0 |
|---|---|
| Final velocity (m/s) | 30 |
| Time (s) | 6 |
- A car goes from 0 to 30 m/s in 6 s.
- a = 30 ÷ 6 = 5.00 m/s², about 0.510 g.
- Distance = 15 × 6 = 90 m.
Result:
| Acceleration (m/s²) | 5.000 |
|---|---|
| In g-forces | 0.510 |
| Distance travelled (m) | 90.00 |
| Average velocity (m/s) | 15.00 |
Frequently asked questions
Can acceleration be negative?
Yes. A negative value means the object is slowing down (deceleration) in the direction of the positive axis.
What is 1 g?
The standard acceleration of gravity, 9.80665 m/s².
