Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use Simple Tip vs Split Bill?

Simple Tip: Use when everyone is splitting the bill evenly (e.g., same amount per person regardless of what each person ordered).
Split Bill: Use when each person pays for what they ordered (e.g., different meals, some people drank alcohol, some didn’t). Tip is split proportionally based on each person’s item total — fairest method for groups.

What tip percentage should I leave?

Standard tipping guidelines (US):
10%: Poor service (rare)
15%: Adequate service (minimum for sit-down dining)
18%: Good service (standard for most restaurants)
20%: Excellent service
22%+: Outstanding service or large groups
For takeout, 10-15% is typical. For bars, $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of tab.

How is tip split in Split Bill mode?

In Split Bill mode, the tip is divided proportionally to each person’s item total. Example: If John ordered $60 and Jane ordered $40 (total $100), and tip is $18, John pays $10.80 tip ($18 × 60%) and Jane pays $7.20 tip ($18 × 40%). This ensures people who ordered more also pay a fair share of the tip.

Does this calculator include tax?

The calculator does not automatically add tax. If your bill includes tax, include it in the subtotal amount. Alternatively, some people prefer to calculate tip on the pre-tax amount — in that case, enter the pre-tax subtotal and add tax manually to the final total.

What if a restaurant adds automatic gratuity for large groups?

Many restaurants add automatic gratuity (often 18-20%) for groups of 6 or more. Check your bill first. If auto-gratuity is already included, set tip percentage to 0% to avoid double tipping. If you want to tip extra on top, add the difference.
